TROY CHRISTIAN SCHOOLS
Instruction Objective
Our primary goal at Troy Christian Schools is to teach the student to view all of life and living things from God’s perspective.
Credentials
Troy Christian Schools is a member of the Association of Christian Schools International and is a charter school of State of Ohio accredited by the State Board of Education.
Our teachers are challenged to model the Master teacher, Christ. Our teaching staff must adhere to our Statement of Faith, have a love for the Lord and children, have a passion for Christian education and have the credentials for what they are being asked to teach.
Teachers:
· Understand characteristics of children in the progressive stages of development and their readiness in relation to learning
· Have a basic understanding and appreciation of the different temperaments and personalities of students
· Balance their means of instruction to meet the needs of auditory, visual and kinesthetic learners
· Listen to students with concern, understanding and respect
· Demonstrate genuine willingness to help students
· Encourage their students to use their gifts and talents
· Guide students to be active in the process of learning
Troy Christian School's Academic Guidance Counselor strives to help our students seek Godly wisdom as they make decisions and choices for their future. The counselor also provides assistance in the sometimes-intimidating processes of testing, applications, and financial aid. The counselor provides encouragement for the student to recognize that God has a plan for each person and that it is much better than anything that we could ever map out for ourselves. The students are encouraged and able to seek direction throughout their junior high and high school career.
Educational Program
Troy Christian Schools take great care in providing a safe, educational, secure and loving environment for every child in our school. Children and teachers are actively involved in discovering their environment…talking, hugging, singing, laughing, and questioning. It is our goal to offer enriched activities in a Christ-centered environment for the social, physical, emotional and spiritual development of each child. We desire each child in our program to understand that he or she is fearfully and wonderfully made and loved by God.
Our classes are a careful balance of activities that assist your child in their development. Our hands-on approach encourages children to be actively involved in the learning process and to experience a variety of activities appropriate for their individual age and rate of development. Each child has the opportunity to create, explore and discover through science, art and dramatic play centers. Language development is emphasized through storytelling, books, music and sharing time. Letters, numbers, colors and shapes, the calendar and seasonal activities are introduced during circle time. Christian character development is fostered through Bible stories, praying together, modeling Christ-like behavior, and play activities. In this environment, your child has an opportunity to solve problems, make decisions and develop self-confidence and respect for others.

To better meet the needs of our Kindergarten students, Troy Christian Schools offer a Pre-Kindergarten program. This program is designed to provide a supportive learning environment based on a child’s developmental needs in a Christ-centered school. Our goal is to look at each child individually and evaluate what will best meet the developmental needs of that child. The Pre-K program allows a child more time to develop interest in reading, writing, language and fine motor skills. Each child has an opportunity to practice problem-solving and decision-making skills and how to interact with their classmates. Pre-K is a proactive approach that recognizes that children need successful experiences to develop long-lasting positive attitudes about school.
Our Pre-K program is designed for those children who are five by September 30 and may need an extra year of development socially, physically, emotionally, or intellectually for the demands and expectations
The State of Ohio Department of Education licenses this program.
Kindergarten
The focus of the Troy Christian School Kindergarten program is to develop a positive attitude toward learning, as well as building a firm foundation for primary grade school experiences. The program is designed to enhance reading, writing, math, science, listening and speaking readiness skills. Children are presented a phonetic based reading program. Emphasis is also given to art, music, and physical education. Each child has the opportunity to reinforce math and reading skills through our weekly computer curriculum. A hands on, experiential approach is incorporated in all areas.
The Elementary Program is designed to provide a strong foundation in reading, writing, math, science and history/social studies. The reading program is based on a phonetic approach. Good literature and writing are part of each grade’s course of study. There is a strong emphasis on problem-solving and critical thinking skills in all subject areas. All grade levels are involved in our computer lab using software to enrich and enhance reading, writing, and math skills. Basic computer skills, word processing, appropriate use of the Internet as an educational tool, and power point are taught. Computers are also available in the classroom for student use in grades 1st - 6th. Music, art and physical education are a part of each child’s week, and fifth and sixth graders may participate in band and choir. A highlight for all children is the outdoor garden (land lab) used for a variety of learning opportunities.
All classes are biblically integrated, and a Bible or Christian Living class is part of each child’s day. The Bible curriculum is based on Christian character development with scripture memorization.
Our Special Education and Intervention Program at TCE was developed for the purpose of helping all of our students to achieve academic success. We realize that each of our students is a unique creation of God, and it is our desire to provide them with the programs and services necessary to meet their individual needs. Our intervention specialists provide small group and individual instruction (including students who need Individual Service Plans) to help students improve their skills in reading, math, language arts, writing, study habits, and organization. An important part of our program is our Intervention Assistance Team (IAT), whose purpose is to give assistance to teachers and parents concerning any special student needs. We believe that when we work together as a team--teachers, students, and parents--we can make a difference in our students' lives. Philippians 4:13: “I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.”
The junior high program is designed to prepare students for their high school years. Emphasis is placed on building confidence in writing, researching, and communicating. Students begin to appreciate different literary genres, increase vocabulary and evaluate literature from a Christian perspective. Science looks at our creation through the orderliness and reality of living things as well as the physical part of our universe. Students will also be exposed to a general study of physics, chemistry and biology. There is opportunity for hands-on laboratory experience and participation in a science fair project. Students will be studying important people, places and events in our world, and twentieth century United States’ history and government. Geography will be taught through the lens of fulfilling the Great Commission. Students will continue to build on their previous math skills and be able to select in seventh grade an accelerated or general math course and in eight grade Pre-algebra or Algebra I course. Algebra I can be counted toward their high school math requirement. There is a full year Bible class where application of God’s Word and principles in everyday life is emphasized. Band, choir, P.E., art, computer, and foreign languages are also offered.
Troy Christian High School prepares students for admission into college through a comprehensive college-preparatory curriculum. Our program provides a Biblically-based instructional program in an environment that encourages both academic excellence and spiritual commitment. Essential to Troy Christian High School’s program is revealing the relationship between academics and God’s truth. Students are challenged to reach their highest potential and to understand how God uniquely designed and gifted each one of them. Students are also provided opportunities to challenge their abilities to think critically, solve problems effectively, and draw conclusions from research, personal analysis and investigation as they apply God’s truth to contemporary and ageless matters.
A significant part of the high school experience is the development of interpersonal skills that are needed to work cooperatively and effectively with others. These skills are enhanced and sharpened through leadership preparation; service in the family, school and local community; and mission expeditions. These experiences are balanced with their academics and extra-curricular activities and are beneficial in discovering their individual learning styles and refining study skills to prepare students to reach their highest potential.
Troy Christian High School has high standards and expectations of its students. Because verbal, written and technology skills are imperative for effective communication, we emphasize them throughout the curriculum. We strive to prepare the students to be competent in the academic disciplines that will enable them to pursue the university and career goals to which they aspire. More importantly, though, we seek to prepare them for living a life that honors Christ and becoming leaders for His Kingdom.
Troy Christian Schools strives to meet the needs of all students. Honors classes are available to highly motivated and gifted students and an intervention team is available to work with students struggling in a subject or who need an individualized academic program.

High School Honors and Advanced Placement Program
The objective of the Honors Program is to create a challenging learning environment for highly motivated, highly gifted students. We define a challenging learning environment as an educational experience in which students learn to discern pertinent information independent of the teacher. Therefore, the teacher’s task is to wean students from following teacher-guided objectives to students who create and follow their own objectives.
A successful honor student utilizes critical and effective study skills, thinks philosophically, abstractly, works independently, confronts problems and objectives logically, and writes excellently. A successful honor student persists through problems in order to achieve the objective. A successful honor student prepares for class before they enter the room so they are better prepared and better able to participate in a more active learning environment.
Students are placed into an honors class by teacher recommendation. A teacher’s recommendation is based upon a student’s grade in the prerequisite class and on the criteria stated in the Honors Philosophy above. Students accepted into the Honors Program will receive letters of acceptance. Students who do not receive a letter of acceptance may appeal a teacher recommendation by completing a form in the main office. Students desiring to advance into Honors English 11 or Honors English 12 must apply for the PSEOP offered through Mount Vernon Nazarene University.
Troy Christian offers Special Education and Intervention Services for students with learning disabilities and special needs. The students we serve are typical learners who receive instruction with individualized consideration for strengths, aptitude and ability. Our professional staff members see to it that students receive the best well-rounded Christ-Centered education possible. Students provided for through our program receive instruction in the mainstream with academic strengths and weaknesses accommodated for through formalized service plans. The advantage we have is a staff that desires to help students reach their full potential for Christ. Our staff knows that each individual student has been created with God's design and purpose. The teaching staff is not afraid to tap into and work hard for the individual differences of a student’s life and purpose. Our students are more engaged in learning about themselves and their academic potential than ever before. The students are reminded that Einstein was deemed unreachable due to his atypical learning style. After they hear that, many want to discover more about themselves and begin learning in a whole new light.
When the administration deems it advisable, an alternate plan of vocational education is available which uses local JVS programs and includes a Bible class once per week at TCHS in the evening. Details of this plan may be obtained from the Principal.
The PSEO Program provides eleventh or twelfth grade students with an opportunity to take classes at eligible post-secondary institutions. These institutions include community colleges, state universities, and many private colleges and universities. The purpose of the program is to promote rigorous academic pursuits and to provide a wider variety of options to high school students. In order for a student to participate he or she will be requested to take three classes on the TCHS campus. Troy Christian Schools has established a PSEO partnership with Mount Vernon Nazarene University, who offers PSEO classes on our campus. For more detailed information on this partnership please visit our PSEO web page located in the Guidance section of this website.
We see our role primarily as assisting families to develop and maintain structure and accountability and to offer to families various resources and opportunities. We will help parents plan courses that will lead to graduation and we will encourage and counsel them through the course work. We also invite homeschoolers to participate in the extra-curricular activities, events and sports that our school has to offer.
Our system of home education is based upon a system of documentation, which is fundamental to accountability and credibility. We provide parents and students with curriculum guides that lead them through their classes and with the necessary texts and materials to accomplish the courses. We ask that each family maintains a lesson planner, and we show parents how to use it. The planner documents the work the student has done and the time spent working. The student is responsible to develop cumulative portfolios (notebooks) of his work in all courses. We show parents how to record and determine grades for each class. The planner, the portfolios and the grade sheets comprise the documentation.
