Power of the Pen Team 2008-09

The 2008-2009 Power of the Pen Team: Sarah G., Catharine M., Josh W., Sarah S., Rachel R., and Emily K.

The Power of the Pen is an 8th grade creative writing competition. The above 8th graders will practice with Mrs. Gainer from October until February. They will then travel to Mississinawa Valley Junior High to compete against other 8th graders. There will be approximately 80 students from 13 different schools at the competition. If the students score high enough on their stories, they will then move on to a regional level of competition, which is held in March. For more information on Power of the Pen visit their website at www.powerofthepen.org.

State Competition: The state competition was held in May at the College of Wooster. Sarah placed 109/340 and Rachel placed 263/340. Two of Sarah’s stories placed first in her room. Congratulations Sarah and Rachel!

Regional Competition: Caty M., Rachel R., and Sarah G. competed at the regional tournament of Power of the Pen on Saturday, March 28. Both Rachel and Sarah received high enough scores to qualify them for the state level of competition. Out of approximately 90 eighth graders, Sarah placed 12th and Rachel placed 11th. In addition, Rachel won the “Best of Round” award for round three. This means, that out of all of the number one stories for round three, Rachel’s was determined to be the best of the best!

District Competition: The 8th grade team competed in the district level of competition last Saturday at Mississinawa Valley.  Out of the six member team, three students scored high enough to move on to the regional competition.  Those students are: Sarah G., Rachel R., and Caty M.  The regional competition will be held Saturday, March 28th at Minster High School.  In addition, there was a “pre-competition” poetry contest which was won by Sarah G.  Her poem was ranked #1 out of all the eighth grade writers and received a 10/10 from all three judges. Congratulations to ALL!
